Basketry is the process of weaving any pliable material into a variety of shapes for a range of purposes, to include vessels used to store grain, gather flowers or vegetables, collect dirty laundry, hold napkins, and even form gondolas for hot air balloons. Because baskets provide functional vessels from readily available, but biodegradable, materials, basketry has been a traditional craft found around the globe and across multiple cultures for millennia, but very few old specimens have been discovered. To date, the oldest extant basket discovered has been determined to be over 10,000 years old, and was found in the desert near the Dead Sea.
In Florida, pine needle coiled baskets have historical roots in the Seminole American Indian Tribe.
Less widely practiced, due to the labor involved, are baskets woven from split or shaved ash strips. A similar look is achieved with reed baskets, the most widely-practiced technique today. Reed can be fashioned into various shapes for weaving with, like round, flat, flat-oval, or flat-round. Thicker reed is used for furniture, and thinner for small container
We have a variety of baskets available for sale or can make one to your specifications.
