Stained glass is a spectacular and traditional craft to learn. Historically, the use of stained glass dates back to the ancient Egyptians and Romans, who created small stained glass items, such as vases and cups. Similar production flourished throughout the Middle East and later in Western Asia. Stained glass windows in British Christian churches and monasteries can be traced back to the year 675. Arguably, the epitome of stained glass windows occurred during the Gothic era when the great cathedrals were being constructed, not only in the British Isles, but also across the European continent.
Today we still see stained glass windows being created for churches. But more commonly, we find everyday people installing stained glass windows in their homes, in addition to embellishing their decor with stained glass sun catchers, plant stakes, nightlights, business card holders, and other fun adornments.
Allison Cox schedules stained glass workshops each month varying the projects but repeating popular ones from time to time. Because the process of creating stained glass objects involves sharp tools, glass, chemicals and heat, these workshops are restricted to those 18 years or older. Participants are also required to wear closed toe shoes. Allison provides all materials and completes prep work ahead of class so attendees have an easier time assembling the project.
